Course: Print Concept
Guided by: Arnab Senapati
Duration: 09/10/23 - 20/10/23
Brief:
The project aims at creating prints by repeating unit area of textures making sure that its balanced in terms of texture, weight of black & white and placement .
This covers playing with different textures, creating a bedsheet layout out of given block , translating paintings onto an existing jaal and a brands style in terms of color and design.

Various textures created using ink and unconventional materials.

1. TEXTURE TALES
The process began with imprinting various textures in ink using different materials. Textures with similar design languages were then selected to create 4x4-inch tiles. Each design incorporated 3-4 tiles to construct a balanced yardage print.

The main objective was to explore how to achieve surface balance using the bold contrast of black and white, ultimately developing a large-scale print measuring 20x44 inches, suitable for reproduction through screen-printing.

After exploring various options, I noticed that the tiles were too similar and lacked dynamism. To remedy this, I developed a new surface using the following five tiles. These textures were created by quickly stroking a mascara brush across the surface. I chose these five blocks because, although they belong to the same family, each one possesses distinct characteristics.

FINAL BLOCKS

The assignment was to design a bedsheet using the provided chevron blocks. However, after the initial layouts, the blocks felt too rigid and graphic. To create a more organic flow, I redesigned the blocks and explored different layouts for the bedsheet.

Given the chevron’s bold, retro, and attention-grabbing nature, the bedsheet design should evoke a similar vibe. The layout should create a balanced contrast, enhancing this dynamic feel.

The redesigned 6x6-inch block minimizes the chevron’s graphical look by making the lines more organic, adding a sense of fluidity to the pattern.
EXPLORATION

FINAL LAYOUT

The goal is to convey the essence of the chosen artwork by reproducing the Jaal pattern from fundamental surface design elements. This involves using mediums that closely reflect the artist's technique, resulting in a balanced and cohesive composition.

This painting conjures imagery of the deep sea, hiding countless jewels and pearls beneath its surface. Inspired by this, I reimagined my original surface as an underwater scene, filled with flowing ferns and petals. The addition of pearls and glimmers brings a captivating allure to the entire composition.

The following is the primary color derived from this image.
