Brief:
The project brief was to create print designs inspired by the traditional crafts of Andhra Pradesh. The task began with selecting a product and designing main surface appropriate for it along with coordinates.
Process:
I studied Kondapalli toys and conducted field research, leading to the development of scarves as a product that artisans can sell as souvenirs.
What led to my choice of this inspiration?
The challenge identified after research was that the artisans face losses due to limited audience for their work. To address this, creating a print that promotes their craftsmanship could be an effective solution. The designed surfaces could be applied to packaging or used as a souvenir print on items like stoles, enhancing visibility and appreciation for their art.

Andhra Pradesh is known for toy craftsmanship from regions like Kondapalli. This toys stand out for their focus on regional themes drawn from the artisans' surroundings, crafted in various sizes as sets. These artisans, from the Arya Kshatriya community, carry on toy-making as a hereditary occupation. The toys are small, narrative, and vibrant, carved from seasoned tella poniki wood, known for its light weight and ease of carving. The designs depict mythological themes, rural life, birds, and animals.

Kondapalli is an industrial town near Vijayawada city, Andhra Pradesh, India with nearly 38000 population covering an area of 1.5 sq kilometers. It is about 20 km by road from Vijayawada on National Highway 221 and on Hyderabad – Vijayawada railway line.The word Kondapalli gets its name from the shepherd named ‘Kondadu’ who showed the site to King Kondaveedu Reddy and hence it was called Kondapalli. The town is known for two major things i.e. ancient ‘Kondapalli Fort’ and its locally-made toy craft Kondapalli bommalu (Kondapalli toys).
